Flash Player Slow Mac Os X 6,9/10 5364 reviews

Adobe Flash Player is a free software plug-in used by web browsers to view multimedia, execute rich Internet applications, and stream video on your Mac.

Adobe Flash Player is the most popular multimedia player plug-in available. However, recently there have been security concerns which has threatened its popularity as users seek safer alternative solutions. Opera, Firefox and Chrome contain built-in versions of Flash running in sandbox mode. This method is safer than running Flash as a plugin. However, currently the reality is that you still may need the Adobe Flash Player on your Mac because many websites will not work well if you uninstall it. Here I’ll show you how to install Adobe Flash Player and how to set it up correctly.

My Flash video files (.mp4s playing through.swfs) are suddenly VERY slow to load in Firefox 11 with Flash Player 11.2.202.233 on my Mac OS X 10.6.8. The same files used to load and play smoothly with earlier versions of Firefox and Flash Player, and they continue to work well in Safari. Flash Player 10 and Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Posted on September 2, 2009 by Tom Barclay The initial release of Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) includes an earlier version of Adobe Flash Player than what is available from Adobe.com.

1. Go to http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ to download the Adobe Flash Player installer.

2. By default, the installer package will be downloaded to your “Downloads” folder.

3. Select the file on your Mac and double click to install it.

4. Select “Allow Adobe to install updates (recommended)” and click “DONE” to complete the installation.

If you installed Adobe Flash Player, but still cannot view online videos on certain websites, you need to check Adobe Flash Player on your browsers.

How to set up Adobe Flash Player on various browsers.

Safari

1. Launch Safari and go to the Apple menu bar and click Preferences.

2. Select the Websites tab and select On for “When visiting other websites.”

3. Refresh the browser tab, or restart the browser.

Google Chrome

1. Launch Chrome and type chrome://settings/content in the address field.

2. Select “Ask first (recommended)” and turn it on.

3. Refresh the browser tab or restart the browser.

Opera

1. Launch Opera and go to the Apple menu bar and click Preferences.

2. Select the Websites tab and then select “Allow sites to run Flash”

3. Refresh the browser tab or restart the browser.

Firefox

1. Launch Firefox and go to the Apple menu bar and click Tools – Add-ons.

2. Click the Plugins tab and turn the “Shockwave Flash” to “Always Activate.”

Note: (SWF (Shock Wave Flash) is a special format created by Macromedia, which has been acquired by Adobe. It is widely used in web design, animation production and other fields.)

For enhancing the user experience and security, Adobe is always trying to improve Adobe Flash Player. However, sometimes when you view a website, a Flash Player upgrade popup appears. Most people would click the “update” button to update their Flash Player, but this could be a false popup used by hackers to compromise your Mac. This is a method hackers use to trick you into downloading adware and malware through a false popup.

Be careful and don’t trust any automatic updates of Adobe Flash Player. Here I will tell you how to install real Flash Player updates and set it up.

How to update Flash Player on Mac safely

1. Go to the Apple menu bar and select System Preferences.

2. Select Flash Player.

3. Select the Updates tab and select “Allow Adobe to install updates (recommended)”. (Note: The Flash plug-in is officially updated 1~2 times a month, so selecting this option avoids frequent update.)

4. You may now notice that the Flash Update settings now shows NPAPI and PPAPI plugins. Let me explain them.

NPAPI – used by Safari, Firefox

PPAPI – used by Chromium, Opera and Chrome (Chrome’s implementation is built in)

5. Click Check Now to confirm that you currently have the latest version installed.

If you had clicked a false popup and downloaded adware, don’t worry, the Apple App Store has many antivirus apps, such as Trend Micro’s Antivirus One, that you can use to do a free scan.

Follow the steps below in case you downloaded a fake Adobe Flash Player.

1. When you first install Antivirus One, click “Pattern Update” to make sure your virus pattern is up to date. We suggest you update the virus pattern every day.

2. After the first installation, we highly suggest you perform a full scan of your Mac to check all files for possible infections. The Full scan will take more than one hour.

3. If you still find adware and a full scan has not found any viruses, we recommend you use Adware Cleaner. You can access Adware Cleaner in the left panel of the Dr. Antivirus window.

How to uninstall Adobe Flash Player

Adobe Flash Player for the Mac is a plug-in, not a Mac OS X application. When you try to uninstall Adobe Flash Player from your Mac, you might find that this plug-in is not so easy to delete. For example, you might see this message:

Cannot find Adobe Flash Player in your Applications folder.

In this case, Adobe Flash Player could not be removed and no reason was given. The following steps show how to uninstall Adobe Flash Player with no remaining parts.

1. Go to the /Applications/Utilities/ folder on your Mac and double-click the Adobe Flash Player Install Manager app.

2. Click Uninstall to begin the process.

3. Type the password and click Install Helper.

4. If your browser is running, the following window will appear. Select “Force Close All” to continue.

5. After the uninstaller removes the Adobe Flash software from your Mac, click Done.

flashplayer.xpt is NOT an older version of the Flash plug-in. It is a component used by the plug-in. You'll eventually run into some flash that will want it and it will fail.

Or use SafariStand (look for it on Versiontracker). It allows you to set Flash to load 'manually', that is, you are shown a grey image placeholder until you click on it. Since on an average site a lot of Flash videos are adverts, I don't even need to load Flash on a normal day. And SafariStand provides a nifty exemption rule for sites that you want to autoload the Flash plugin for.

I don't think that file is 'old'. I have that same file in the plugins folder and it's dated October 2008, so it was created and installed with the last flash install.

The little file is only 4K, so it is definitely not an old version. Looks like an XPCOM from the first line. You can open it in a text editor.
I can't imagine Flash loads faster without it, and it will probably be missed later.001a00010002

It is, as others have said, not an old file, nor an uneeded file. It is the binary interface file for the Flash player plugin.

I am certainly no expert in flash, but I tried this hint and Safari is running much faster for me. The past few months have been a sluggish nightmare on pages with flash, especially the first-daily visits of certain sites. Flash would hang for 5 to 15 seconds while I watched the spinning wheel, causing my blood pressure to increase. Now those hesitations are gone, flash is still working (so far), and I feel more relaxed without seeing the spinning wheel :) I don't care if flash does not always work. Flash is far too often unnecessarily overused.

I understand the debate, but I don't think anyone whose posted thus far really knows 100% what the file is for. However, I can attest that removal of the file (I just added a bogus file extension so I can return it to normal later if needed) indeed greatly improves performance. Whenever I was playing scrabble on facebook and then started up pandora, flash would always slow everything way down, making the scrabble interface unusable and no music would play either for minutes or until a message would come up with a flash error and not play at all. Changing the file name caused me to open both flash apps instantly with no delay!

@robleach
'..I don't think anyone whose [sic] posted thus far really knows 100% what the file is for.'
What led you to that conclusion? Appeared to me there were some pretty knowledgeable folks weighing in.

Apparently, flashplayer.xpt is needed for scripting support.
Visit http://kb.mozillazine.org/Flash and about half way down the Windows section: 'flashplayer.xpt [..] (for scripting support).'
It's also referenced here:
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?p=309160&sid=006a6cd112b31a2955252261443bad2f#p309160
Even though it's mentioned in the Windows section, I bet it's still needed on the Mac side (see http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flashplayer/articles/flash_player_admin_guide/flash_player_admin_guide.pdf) .
Now the real question is 'What kind of scripting support?'. I think I'll start digging around the Adobe site: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=site%3Aadobe.com+'flashplayer.xpt';

Wouldn't life be great if removing this scripting support only gets rid of those Flash cookies (Local Shared Objects) and does not prevent the actual usage of flash?

Player

To me, the hidden Flash privacy abuse alone is a reason to hope for alternatives. However, during some testing I did, disabling these cookies seemed to make some Flash sites load a lot slower, or not load at all. Odd: choosing 'Always deny' would not start flash on some sites, but using 'Always ask' for the very same site would actually make the flash start when the '.. is requesting permission to store information on your local computer' dialog was still shown, after which denying access would then not stop the already running flash.. This makes me wonder if scripting was involved, so if I can find those sites again I will certainly experiment a bit!

This is like trying to fix the yellowness of yellow. Flash on the mac feels different than on the PC, it's slower and uses far more CPU, (not just when loading) and it's always been that way, so I recommend trying to avoid it instead of fixing it. Clicktoflash is the best way right now IMO. Free animation program for mac os x 10.6.8free download for mac os x 10 6 8. There is very little softwarewise that you can do on a mac that will have such an impact on performance systemwide, especially if you use a lot of tabs and like to keep the browser up for as long as possible.

Hi,
Dont shoot me but im a a Flash developer ( no banners though!).
Looking at the contents of this file it would seem to be the support for the legacy AS1 Javascript>Flash scripting. This is was deprecated as of flash version 7 ( we're on v10 now) in preference of ExternalInterface so unless you're browsing sites made over 4/5 yrs ago I doubt youll come across any problems.

If your browsers were set to 'Open in Rosetta' for older Flash Player versions on Macs with Intel CPUs, that causes serious problems too. Reset these to open the browser normally for every browser and every user.

I registered with this forum to comment on this thread.
I have an iBook G4, and was so sick of flash looking terrible and had tried reverting to flash 9 and 8. Version 8 was the only one that ran smoothly, but of course it wasn't compatible with anything but youtube.. and the videos looked like they did when youtube first started.
So I figured I'd just have to live with choppy videos in flash 10 until I could get a new computer.
I came across this thread and figured it couldn't hurt to try deleting the .xpt file.
I'm completely amazed. That did the trick!
Before, I had to keep my mouse still and refrained from having multiple tabs open to watch a video. Now, even hulu looks smooth!
Thank you so so so much!
